In Canada, Egale promotes intersex rights and awareness through research, resource creation, and legal advocacy. Internationally, we support organizations that promote research on and the advancement of intersex rights, such as in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Zambia.
We applaud the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for undertaking a study on the critical issue of combatting discrimination, violence, and harmful practices against intersex individuals.
Egale makes the following submission to ensure the OHCHR is aware of the ongoing violence towards intersex individuals occurring in Canada, namely through intersex genital mutilation (IGM), the blatant lack of government willingness to condemn these harmful practices, and inadequate protections afforded towards intersex individuals.
