We all know what it’s like to feel lonely – that aching feeling of being excluded, rejected and othered.

That is why all of Egale’s work, from research and education to advocacy and community programs, aims to create a world where everyone is included and valued – equal and not other.

This year, we’re launching #HomeNotAlone, a campaign to help bring people together safely this season. With your support, we can reduce social isolation, celebrate our chosen family and friends, and make sure that no one feels alone while staying safe at home.

All LGBTQI2S people have felt the impact of COVID-19 on their mental health and relationships. Physical distancing regulations have meant that connections with coworkers, friends and family have been strained, or in some cases, non-existent. As we enter the second wave of COVID-19 coupled with the winter season, many people are fearful when thinking of the days and weeks to come. LGBTQI2S seniors, youth and everyone in between has felt the loneliness of the pandemic.

Even before the pandemic, over 53% of LGBT seniors in Canada felt isolated. LGBTQI2S people, seniors and older adults live alone more frequently and often rely on surrogate family and friends rather than biological kin. They are also less likely to have children to take care of them as they age.

In this second wave of COVID-19, many LGBTQI2S youth have found themselves stuck at home with families who don’t accept them. These young people already face exceedingly high rates of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation, all of which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Help Egale bring people together, because everyone deserves to be safe at home and not feel alone. A gift this winter will help Egale deliver virtual and safe, in-community programming.

Egale’s programs and services are helping bring people together safely.

Volunteer Opportunities

Rainbow Table Community Host (Virtual)

A Rainbow Table is a virtual space where LGBTQI2S people can connect during the COVID-19 pandemic, the holiday season and beyond. To help the community through the harsh winter season and enhanced physical distancing regulations, we are looking for #HomeNotAlone Rainbow Table Community Hosts to create Rainbow Tables online in their communities.

From discussions over coffee to community guest speakers, a book club, a walk-and-talk group, movie nights and more, a regular Rainbow Table meeting is simply an excuse to bring people together. Hosting duties include scheduling virtual or safe in-person meetings, inviting participants and communicating the project to others and being ready with conversation starters and more.

Click here for a step-by-step guide to help you start a Rainbow Table in your community, at work or with friends and chosen family. The guide is geared toward working with seniors, but Rainbow Tables are for all ages! The more intergenerational the group, the better chances of breaking social isolation, sharing knowledge and enjoying time together.

Ambassador (Virtual)

As a #HomeNotAlone Ambassador, we want you to share a message of hope, togetherness, and community. Make a video, write a poem or a song, post a picture or share a story. Let us know how you are staying connected or send a message we can share with a student or a senior who is struggling with loneliness. Regale us with tales of your own experiences, post your artwork or self-care rituals or share your biggest hope for those who are facing the winter season alone.

Whatever the format of your message of hope, tag Egale on social media and use the hashtags #HomeNotAlone and #HomeNotAloneAmbassador. We will pass your message on to help remind people that although they might be stuck at home, they are never alone. We can’t wait to see your messages, videos and creations.
