Every year, the week leading up to International Nonbinary People’s Day (July 14th) is Nonbinary Awareness Week. Amidst the current climate of hate towards trans and nonbinary people, awareness is all the more important when it comes to combatting the misinformation and disinformation that paint gender diverse people as undeserving of basic human rights such as access to healthcare, employment, and even the right to choose when to come out.
In our Healthcare access experiences and needs among LBQ women, trans, and nonbinary people in Canada study, trans and nonbinary participants experienced anxiety, fear, and stress about accessing care in a healthcare system that does not take gender diversity into account. Trans and nonbinary people also face widespread discrimination in employment: 74% of Two Spirit, trans, and nonbinary individuals who participated in Egale’s national Working for Change study had to hide aspects of their identity when seeking employment to avoid discrimination. Further, recent policy announcements in Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, and Alberta endanger the safety of trans youth, forcing them either to be outed to their families, even against their will, or to remain closeted at school.
This Nonbinary Awareness Week, we ask everyone – allies and community members alike, to take some time to reflect, learn more about the issues that nonbinary people face, and to raise your voice against injustice towards nonbinary people in all its forms. See our resources below for further learning.
