FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 19, 2025

Everyone deserves to live in safety and dignity – no matter who they are or where they are.

That’s why Egale Canada strongly opposes the Quebec government’s decision to incarcerate transgender people based on their sex assigned at birth.

This policy doesn’t make prisons safer. Instead, it increases the risk of harm for those who are already most vulnerable – Two Spirit, trans, and gender diverse people, many of whom are also Black, Indigenous, racialized, and low-income. These are the same communities who already face disproportionately high rates of policing, criminalization, and incarceration.

In 2022, Egale Canada joined feminist organizations, including the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), in urging correctional systems to abandon discriminatory practices and uphold human rights for all incarcerated people.

We urge the Government of Quebec to reverse this harmful decision and work with trans communities to create policies that reflect the values of equity, safety, and dignity for all.
