Every March 31, trans and nonbinary communities, along with allies, celebrate #TransDayOfVisibility, a day of joy and recognition.
But in a time of increasing anti-trans misinformation and disinformation, visibility comes with heightened risks. False narratives and misleading policies are fueling anti-trans hate and shaping harmful government decision that directly endanger trans lives.
Misinformation also fuels workplace discrimination: 74% of Two Spirit, trans, and nonbinary job seekers in Egale’s Working for Change study reported hiding aspects of their identity to avoid discrimination. Stereotypes and misinformation about trans workers lead to exclusion, underemployment, and economic hardship.
Visibility is a balancing act.
To be safely visible is a privilege.
But when false narratives make trans lives a political battleground, visibility also becomes a form of resistance.
This Trans Day of Visibility, we call on those with the privilege of safety to be vocal in countering mis- and disinformation and advocating for trans and nonbinary people everywhere.
