Information for Trans and Gender-Diverse Voters

Elections Canada is committed to ensuring a fair and inclusive voting process for all Canadians, including trans and gender-diverse voters. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Your sex, gender identity or expression, or the sex indicator on your ID does not impact your right to vote. To vote, ensure that your name and address on your Elections Canada accepted ID matches your voter registration.
  • You can still vote even if your appearance does not match your photo ID, as long as your address and name on your ID match your voter information.
  • Even if your two pieces of ID show different sex or gender information, you can still vote as long as your address and name on both forms of ID match the information on your voter registration.
  • The names on your chosen ID documents must match and align with your voter information. However, if your two pieces of ID show two different names, there are still other ways to prove your identity and address. Please refer to Elections Canada for more information.
  • If you have changed your first and/or middle name, please update your information with Elections Canada directly. While this information may be updated automatically, Elections Canada may have trouble authenticating this data, resulting in delays to your voter information.
  • While you may introduce yourself with your preferred name at the polling station, to vote your name and address on your ID and voter registration must match.
