Egale accepts cryptocurrency donations through the trusted donor platform, CanadaHelps. CanadaHelps is a trusted charity that supports the connection between donors and the causes they care about and now offers another means of donating — cryptocurrency. Through our unique CanadaHelps cryptocurrency donation link here, you can donate Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH) directly to Egale. Your donation will be promptly converted to cash and distributed to support our REAL approach to inclusion — research, education, awareness, and legal advocacy. After your donation is converted you will receive a tax receipt from CanadaHelps on the day your donation is sold.

Cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency. It typically uses blockchain technology which makes it practically impervious to counterfeiting. It differs to traditional fiat currencies in that it is decentralized and is generally not overseen by a central bank/authority. There are many forms of cryptocurrency, of which Bitcoin is the most widely known.

Cryptocurrency donations in Canada are considered a taxable commodity and you should review CRA’s advice on Cryptocurrency for how to use donations to reduce your taxable income. CanadaHelps issues your tax receipt to you on the day the cryptocurrencies are sold and then disburse your donation. You will be prompted to provide your personal information such as email, name, and address to issue your tax receipt through the CanadaHelps platform.
Your cryptocurrency donation will be automatically converted into cash in order to directly fund Egale’s strategic initiatives, including research, education, awareness, and legal advocacy in order to improve the lives of 2SLGBTQI individuals and enhance the global response to LGBTQI issues.
CanadaHelps is committed to carbon neutral donations. Through carbon credits they are dedicated to offsetting any carbon emissions made by crypto donations and ensure carbon neutrality. Cryptocurrency donations are non-refundable once they are received in the CanadaHelps wallet unless there are extreme extenuating circumstances. CanadaHelps follows the guidelines of the CRA regarding donation refunds. In the case of an extenuating circumstance CanadaHelps offers refunds based on the value of the cryptocurrency at the time it was exchanged with fees deducted.
