FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 29, 2024

Egale Canada and You Can Play are proud to present a new campaign to promote sport inclusion for 2SLGBTQI communities.

As the world comes together for the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics, it is a critical moment to reaffirm the importance of inclusion in sport for 2SLGBTQI people.

With so many 2SLGBTQI athletes set to compete this year, we are reminded of the power of sport to unite and inspire. Egale and You Can Play have set out to show everyone across Canada – individual fans watching from home, as well as sport organizations large and small – the importance of inclusion in sport.

Historically, 2SLGBTQI individuals, especially transgender people, often face exclusion in sport. This exclusion is not only a personal loss for the individuals, but also a loss for the sporting community, which misses out on the diverse talents and perspectives these athletes bring. This is why Egale and You Can Play are working together to break down barriers through this sport inclusion campaign that will have:

  • You Can Play on the ground in Paris to take part in discussions, provide resources to spectators and athletes, and support the Canadian Olympic Committee’s efforts to ensure all are welcome and included on the world’s sporting stage.
  • New resources to support everyone – from local recreational clubs to professional leagues – in creating 2SLGBTQI-inclusive sport environments.
  • A growing directory of local sport leagues and clubs across Canada that actively include and create space for 2SLGBTQI people.
  • Social media posts and updates that will run throughout the Olympic and Paralympic Games to educate and encourage viewers across Canada to help spread the powerful message that every athlete, regardless of gender identity, attraction or level of sport deserves to compete and be celebrated fairly!
