Egale Canada condemns Pierre Poilievre’s deeply hateful and harmful claims

No matter where you live in Canada, what you look like, how old you are, whom you love or how you identify, everyone deserves to feel safe at home, at school, and in their community.

But Pierre Poilievre’s recent claims that “radical gender ideology” is being imposed on children is part of a misinformation-fueled hate campaign that is threatening the safety, freedoms, and rights of 2SLGBTQI people, especially those who are Two Spirit, trans, nonbinary, and/or gender non-conforming (2STNBGN).

As Canada’s leading organization for 2SLGBTQI people and issues, Egale Canada condemns these deeply hateful and harmful claims by Pierre Poilievre. 

The undeniable rise in anti-2SLGBTQI and anti-trans hate has devastating real life consequences. According to Statistics Canada, the number of police-reported hate crimes targeting sexual orientation is rising every year. From 2018 to 2022, police-reported hate crimes targeting sexual orientation increased a staggering 164 per cent. 
All levels of government have a responsibility to take concrete action to end the violence against 2SLGBTQI people in our country, and it is frankly irresponsible and unacceptable to see one of our political leaders knowingly contributing to the violence and discrimination.
